Twitter Was Actually Good for Something This Week
#BeckyWithTheBadBribes, Dept. of Labor, Climate Strikes and More Internships.
K lo K my peoples. Grab a mug, we have some media things to get out of the way:
Epicurious, an online food pub, was dragged to filth for posting an entry-level job that was 40 hrs/wk with no benefits. The audacity.
The media gods stepped in and someone reported them to the NYS Department of Labor, which lead to someā¦ interesting conclusions.
And then:
You best believe I will now be applying for said job. Especially now that people are asking them to consider unionizing.
Also #BeckyWithTheBadBribes or BeckyWithTheBadHeir (take your pick) was uncovered along with many other bougie people paying for their subpar children to get into higher education. Getting called out and facing charges doesnāt begin to scratch the surface of inequality in the United Statesā¦ but itās a damned good place to start.
Things Iāve Done:
Your girl had a double byline day at The Nation yesterday. I wrote about Alexandria VillaseƱor, a 13-year-old climate activist in NYC who will be leading todayās Manhattan based #FridaysforFuture strike. I also spoke to Vanessa Nakate, a climate activist from Kampala, Uganda about the rising awareness about climate change in African countries.
Like thrifting? I wrote an outline of my favorite shops for Coconuts (formerly Nooklyn Stories).
Know any high school aged Latinos in need of resources for higher education because their parents arenāt super wealthy and messed up enough to bribe their kids into college? I wrote about an upcoming Latino College Expo for Bushwick Daily.
A man tried to flirt with me on LinkedIn once, I told him not to and he mansplained freedom of speech to a freelance journalist. So I wrote about it.
I was sexually harassed at a college job. Iām still mad (and low-key traumatized). I wrote about that too.
Need a Writing/Media Internship?
I appreciate everyone and anyone who decides to read this newsletter. But Iād also like to recommend The Intern Weekly newsletter. They come straight to your inbox which means you donāt have to look for them yourself.
Also, The Nation (where I am currently a fact-checking intern), has opened up submissions for the next round of internships. Itās an amazing experience, the supervisor will feed you pizza sometimes, and youāll get a lot of hands on experience at an amazing progressive magazine.
If you are a lady who writes things, consider following Women Who Submit on Twitter. The account encourages women and non-binary writers to submit work to different publications.
Have a restful weekend! If you have time, support the climate strikes, get some rest, and eat a platano or two.
