WHAT IS UP MY PEOPLES!
I won an award for a series I wrote on City Limits last year called Can Buses Be Better? I wrote about how NYC’s MTA bus system and why it’s such a huge problem for commuters. It’s an honor to be an award winning journalist, even though I still haven’t been able to get a job after years of trying. But at least I get to add a line to my resume (glass half full!).
Maybe me being cartooned in New York Magazine last year gave me some luck:
I also recently wrote about how to negotiate more money as a freelancer on Medium. It’s taken me years to learn how to value my labor and to pitch higher paying publications that value my work and my time. Negotiating is an important skill that all freelancers need to learn to do and it’s especially important for writers of color to push for more money. We’ve often overworked, under-resourced, underrepresented, and UNDERPAID compared to our counterparts.
So if you’re in the business of freelancing, negotiate your money wisely and pitch your work to editors that care about the quality of your work and your experience.
